No single satellite network is best on every voyage. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) services such as Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb bring low latency and high throughput. Geostationary (GEO) VSAT offers committed information rates and contractual SLAs. L-band services such as Fleet Broadband and Iridium Certus are far less affected by heavy rain and provide resilient global coverage.
A blended design uses each where it is strongest. An SD-WAN on board steers traffic across the available links by policy and moves it automatically when one degrades, so crew do not need to intervene when the ship sails through heavy weather, a congested beam or a coverage gap.
Traffic prioritisation matters as much as raw bandwidth. Bridge traffic, ECDIS updates, engine data and ship-shore messaging should always take priority over crew and guest traffic, and an independent L-band backup keeps safety-critical and operational communications alive when primary links fail.
Finally, cost control has to be designed in: real-time usage visibility, data pooling across the fleet and bandwidth policies that stop surprise bills. Visiotech designs, installs and manages this kind of hybrid connectivity through one portal and one service desk.
